How to use StrumTick
StrumTick is a metronome and tuner in one: The Tunin' Timin' ToolBox. Use the tabs at the bottom to switch between β± Metronome, πΈ Tuner and π Log.
Getting started
- Open the Metronome tab and tap βΆ Start. Tap it again to stop.
- To tune, open the Tuner tab, tap π€ Start tuner, and allow the microphone.
- Items marked π Pro come with the one-time StrumTick Pro unlock. The full metronome and standard tuning are always free.
Metronome
- Tempo: type a number in the BPM box (20β300), drag the slider, or use β / +. Hold β or + to change it quickly.
- +/β step: choose how far each tap moves: 1, 2, 5, 10, or Other for your own step.
- Tap tempo: tap the button in time with the music to set the BPM.
- Time signature: pick from the list (2/2 to 15/16), or choose Customβ¦ to set Beats per bar (1β32) and Note value.
- Accents: tap a beat dot to change it: β² accent β normal β silent. Beat 1 is accented by default.
- Sound: Drumstick, Click, Wood or Beep. Volume has its own slider.
- Subdivision: β© (quarter notes), β« 8ths, 3 Triplet or 16ths.
The β² accent mark
An accented dot has a double ring and a small β² above it. That way you can find beat 1 by its shape, not just its color, even in dim light. You see it in both color modes, and the legend reads "β² accent".
Polyrhythm
Under Polyrhythm, choose Off, 3 : 2 or Even triplets.
- 3 : 2 plays a low click twice and a high click three times on every beat, evenly spaced, with both landing together on the beat.
- Untick the "2" layer or the "3" layer to practice against the other one.
Speed trainer π Pro
Open Speed trainer and turn on Gradually speed up.
- Set the Start BPM and Target BPM.
- Choose Bars or Seconds, then fill in Add [5] BPM per [4] bars (or seconds).
- Pick a Duration:
- Target: speeds up until it reaches the target BPM.
- Time: runs for the minutes and seconds you set, then finishes the bar and stops.
- Until I stop: keeps speeding up (up to 300 BPM) until you stop it.
- Pick what happens At the target tempo:
- Hold: keeps playing at the target tempo.
- Restart: plays one more step at the target, then drops back to the start BPM and ramps up again.
- Stop: plays one more step at the target, then stops.
- Chime on each tempo change is optional. The screen always flashes.
Always on the beat: every run starts on beat 1, and every speed-up, Restart and Stop lands on beat 1. That's true in Seconds mode too. The BPM number changes right when the new tempo's beat 1 sounds. StrumTick remembers your choices.
Mute bars π Pro
Turn on Drop the click sometimes and set Play bars and Silent bars. Keep counting through the silent bars. If you stayed in time, the click comes back on beat 1 right with you.
Tuner
- Tap π€ Start tuner and play one string. The big letter is the note. The needle and lights show if you're flat or sharp, and the cents are shown below.
- Pick your Instrument and Tuning. With Auto-detect string on, StrumTick picks the nearest string. Tap a string to lock it, or tap π to hear it.
- A4 reference: adjust from 432 to 446 Hz (440 is standard).
- βΆ Stage: a big, dark full-screen view. Tap the note to open it, or just turn your phone sideways while tuning. Tap anywhere or β to leave.
- Once all strings are in tune, tap β» Check again for a second pass. Tuning one string pulls on the others.
- π Pro adds Chromatic mode (any note), alternate tunings, and My custom tunings.
- My custom tunings: type notes low to high, like D A D G B E. StrumTick picks the right octave for each string. Advanced: add a number like D2 to set the octave yourself.
Color-blind mode (on by default)
The tuner uses blue/orange in place of red/green, along with arrows and Flat/Sharp text. To switch it off, tap the Color-blind: On/Off pill on the Tuner screen, or untick Color-blind safe colors in the tuner settings. StrumTick remembers your choice.
Tuning tips
A tips card appears the first time you open the tuner. Bring it back any time by tapping β at the top of the tuner.
Practice log π Pro
Log your date, minutes, top BPM and a note. Use this session fills in your metronome time for you. Export CSV saves your history. The log is stored only on this device.
